Fort Pitt Bridge Accident – A tragic multi-vehicle crash near the Fort Duquesne Bridge in Pittsburgh claimed the lives of two people on Wednesday afternoon after an SUV plunged off a ramp and landed on the roadway below. The devastating accident caused major traffic disruptions throughout the city and left authorities investigating what led to the deadly collision.

According to officials, the crash occurred around 3 p.m. and involved five vehicles near the southbound Route 65 ramp leading to the Fort Duquesne Bridge. PennDOT confirmed that the ramp was immediately shut down following the collision, causing significant backups during the evening rush hour as emergency crews responded to the chaotic scene.

Authorities said one of the vehicles involved, an SUV, flipped over the side of the bridge and crashed onto Reedsdale Street on Pittsburgh’s North Side near Acrisure Stadium. The violent impact killed the driver at the scene, officials confirmed.

Another occupant of the SUV was trapped inside the wreckage and had to be rescued using the “jaws of life.” Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson Cara Cruz said the victim was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite emergency medical efforts, she later died from her injuries.

The identities of the two victims have not yet been publicly released pending notification of family members.

Officials stated that no other individuals involved in the five-vehicle crash sustained injuries, though the emotional impact of witnessing such a catastrophic accident was evident among first responders and motorists in the area.

Pittsburgh Police Chief Jason Lando described the crash scene as “pretty complex,” noting the significant force required for a vehicle to overturn and fall from the bridge ramp onto the street below. While investigators have not officially determined the cause of the crash, Lando acknowledged that speed may have been a contributing factor.

“We’re very early in the investigation, so I don’t want to speculate,” Lando said. “But we all know it takes a pretty significant amount of speed and force to flip over a bridge deck.”

The police chief also used the tragedy as a sobering reminder about the dangers of reckless driving and speeding on Pittsburgh roadways.

“I drive this route home every day, people are constantly flying by me on my way home, so please, just slow down,” Lando said. “We want people to get home safely.”

The crash led to severe traffic congestion throughout the area for several hours as emergency crews worked to investigate the scene, remove damaged vehicles, and clear debris from both the bridge ramp and Reedsdale Street below. Authorities finally reopened the roadway shortly before 7 p.m., ending hours of delays that stretched into the evening commute.

Witnesses near the scene described a massive emergency response involving police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and transportation officials. The sight of a vehicle overturned below the bridge near one of Pittsburgh’s busiest areas stunned many residents and commuters.

As investigators continue working to determine exactly what caused the chain-reaction crash, community members are mourning the loss of the two victims whose lives were tragically cut short in the devastating accident.

The incident serves as another painful reminder of the dangers associated with high-speed driving and the importance of caution on heavily traveled urban roadways. Authorities are expected to release additional details regarding the crash as the investigation progresses.
